Sustainability

We will commit substantial resources to making our race sustainable, and we will endeavor to use those resources as efficiently as possible to have a positive impact on our local, global, and running community. As an event, we subscribe to the 5 Rs: Reconsider, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Below are ways that we address different sustainability concerns and how you can get involved.

Waste: We strive to be a zero-waste event (90%+ diversion rate).

Energy: We will attempt to increase our percentage of energy derived from renewable sources year-over-year, and highlight our use of alternative energy to the public.

Water: We will attempt to minimize our event’s water footprint, and implement gray water recapture practices when possible. We will protect Austin’s waterways from pollutants and run-off.

Procurement and Sourcing: We will consider sustainability in all decisions regarding awards, giveaways, marketing, and signage. We will eliminate unnecessary items whenever possible and find creative ways to reuse or recycle overages. We will share materials between multiple events when possible.

Food and Beverages: We will make our best effort to provide locally-sourced and organic food products from local businesses. We will require that our vendors reduce packaging and use compostable or recyclable packaging whenever possible. We have banned Styrofoam from our event.

Innovative Joint Projects: We will look to partner with all possible partners—including government agencies, non-profits, private entities, and running community stakeholders—in order to better achieve and broaden our sustainability goals.

Charities: We will build partnerships with quality Central Texas non-profits that can most benefit from the exposure and fundraising opportunities provided by the event.

Beginner Outreach: We will create an environment welcoming to beginners and encouraging them to make running or walking a part of a healthy lifestyle.

Community Relations and Outreach: We will take an active and positive role in our community by maintaining communication with stakeholders, proactively addressing concerns, and organizing year-round outreach projects that encourage runners to do good in our community.

Inclusion: We will create an inclusive environment that encourages and welcomes under-represented communities and differently-abled individuals to participate in our event and make fitness a part of their lifestyle.

Get Involved: Our green team is powered by alternative energy—yours! Check back here later for how you can get involved.
